Special Needs Child

In collaboration with ACC Institute of Human Services, SERA is offering a 1-day Child First Aid & Understanding Children with Special Needs for young parents and early childhood educators .

The 1-day workshop is divided to 2 components:

  • Understanding Special Needs Child (4hrs)
  • Provide Basic Child and Infant First Aid (4hrs)

At the end of the course, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance, by ACC Institute of Human Services and Singapore Emergency Responder Academy.

Course Information

Objectives

At the end of the course the young parents and early childhood educators will be able to:

  • Understand the overview of characteristics of different developmental disabilities (ADHD, Autism, Down Syndrome, Learning Disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders)
  • Manage behavioral issues of children with special needs (e.g. tantrums, non-participation and aggression)
  • Engage children with special needs in class rooms
  • Recognize a medical emergencies situation involving child and infant
  • Perform CPR on child and infant during an Emergency
  • Render the appropriate first aid treatment for Foreign Body Airway Obstruction on Child and Infant
  • Identify the common medical illness of child and infant

Course Content

  • Overview of characteristics of different developmental disabilities (ADHD, Autism, Down Syndrome, Learning Disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders)

  • No medical heart and lung conditions or any physical disabilities and injuries that will prevent the participant from performing CPR

Jarmaine Samonte

Jarmaine Samonte holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of the Philippines Diliman. She has completed 36 graduate units in Special Education from the same university. She has also taken the Certificate Program in Education to obtain her license as a professional teacher in the Philippines.

Her work experience includes teaching children with special needs for 3 years. She has handled children with autism, intellectual disability, learning disability, global developmental disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. As a special education teacher, she employed special educational strategies as well as behavior modification and intervention techniques to improve learning and to achieve target educational goals of children.

Jarmaine has also served children and teenagers with special needs as a behaviour therapist in Singapore for 5 years, utilising Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy techniques through individualised home-based and centre-based therapy services. In addition, she assisted in social skills classes which aimed to prepare children for their integration into the mainstream society.

As someone who values further learning and growth, she has attended various seminars and workshops on learning strategies and interventions for special needs individuals. She has also served the community as a volunteer in the kidsREAD programme of National Library Board, and as a volunteer Sunday school teacher of preschool-aged children.

Jarmaine is a full-time lecturer with ACC Institute of Human Services. She teaches the Specialist Diploma in Teaching and Supporting Children with Special Needs and the Specialist Diploma in Applied Psychology.

  • Able to speak, read and understand English effectively
  • No medical heart and lung conditions or any physical disabilities and injuries that will prevent the participant from performing CPR

The course will be conducted by First Aid Trainer with the following background:

  • Child First Aid Instructor Certification
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support + AED Chief Instructor
